There are over 26 million speakers of Romanian, the majority of whom live in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, where Romanian is also an official language. In addition, there are ethnic groups of speakers of Romanian living in Bulgaria, Hungary, the Ukraine and a region of Serbia (Vojvodina).
Romanian is a Balkan-Romance language of the Indo-European language family. It is similar to the languages of the regions surrounding Romania, such as Italian. However, unlike Italian, Romanian has adopted words and phonetic symbols from Slavic. This means that Romanians are usually able to understand basic Italian, but Italian people find Romanian difficult to master.
As a Romance language, Romanian originates directly from Vulgar Latin. Modern Romanian uses an expanded version of the Latin alphabet with special characters, instead of the Cyrillic alphabet of the past.
