Slovak is a West Slavic language in the Indo-European language group. Slovakia is home to 5 million native speakers of Slovak, but an additional million Slovak speakers live in Canada, the USA, the Ukraine, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary and Romania.
Slovak originated from the Slovene language in the 10th Century. Latin, German and Hungarian were the major languages of administration and commerce in Slovakia at the time, because the country was ruled by the Kingdom of Hungary. In the 14th Century, Czech (rather, Czech seasoned with Slovak) grew in use. By the 1900s, Slovak had at last been codified, and a simple written language came into being.
Due to its history and the country’s former inclusion in the Kingdom of Hungary, Slovak contains a range of words borrowed from Czech, German, Latin and other European languages.
