Swedish belongs to the Skandinavian language group (also called the North Germanic or Northern languages), along with Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic and Faroese. Swedish is derived from the Germanic languages of the Indo-European language group.
There are approximately 8.5 million native speakers of Swedish, most of whom reside in Sweden. Swedish is one of the two official languages of Finland, which was ruled by Sweden until 1809, and roughly 300,000 native speakers of Swedish live there (6% of the population): roughly 25,000 of these people live on the Aland Islands, where Swedish is the sole language. In Finland, Swedish is taught as a compulsory school subject. It is interesting to know that Swedish is not an official language in Sweden.
