The History of Ukrainian
There are over 31 million native speakers of Ukrainian in the Ukraine, where it is the official language. Elsewhere, an additional 16 million native speakers live in over 25 countries including the USA, Canada, Belarus, Russia, Poland and Slovakia.
Ukrainian is an East Slavic language, and is derived from Proto-Slavic in the 9th Century, in the region of Kievan Rus’. However, because ‘Rus’ is erroneously taken to stand for ‘Russian’, the Russian language was named Great Russian and Ukrainian became Lesser Russian. An independent written and spoken Ukrainian language finally arose in the 18th Century, although this language remained below Russian in terms of importance in the late 1800s (the Russian Empire) and in the late 1900s (the Soviet Union). Ukrainian was still spoken, but was not the lingua franca. Even modern Ukrainian displays many clear Russian influences.
Ukrainian has been the official language of the Ukraine since 1991.
