The Classification and Use of Spanish

Spanish belongs to the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family. It is classed as an Ibero-Romance language alongside Portuguese and Catalan.

The Spanish languages uses a slightly extended Latin alphabet with acute accents to denote pronunciation stress, and the letters ñ and ü.

There are 360 million native speakers of Spanish around the world, living in Spain, Mexico, Columbia, Argentina, Nicaragua, Chile, the USA, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru. There are an additional 60 million people who speak Spanish as a second language. This means that Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese, Hindi and English. It is an official language in the following countries: Equatorial Guinea, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Equador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Columbia, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and the USA. It is also one of the official languages of the EU, the UN and the African Union.
